A Safeguard Against Inflation and Deflation

  • Cash would be good in a deflation.
  • Cash would be bad in an inflation.

What stores value equally well in any environment?

Real estate – meh, not so much. I’m thinking (once again) – gold.

Of course, in a deflation cost per ounce goes down, however theoretically (and practically?) that ounce of gold can buy you the same amount of “widgets”, because “widgets” now cost less as well.

I’ll try to buy some gold from Questrade tomorrow.

Update: I changed the subject of the post, accidentally put in “Depression” instead of “Deflation” :) oops, Freudian slip.

And I decided to put off buying of the physical gold until $850 is tested.

Note to Self: Charge Double Rates in the Summer

We essentially sold our summer, and are having to work on this “project from hell” (it lasts forever and has lots of loose ends that won’t be tied until the very end – that alone is enough to drive me nuts).

Even though we quoted a good amount, we should have doubled our rates! It’s twice as hard to sit at the computer all day and work in the summer than it is in winter.

*Sigh*
(ok, I know it’s showing rain but we had a long, cold, dark winter so this is good enough)

Food Spending Chart

Here’s a chart with our food expenses, from Jan 2007 to May 2008 (without alcohol). August and September omitted due to our trip in that period.

Frustrating…

2007 Summary: Income

We’re a long way away from freedom if you define it as not depending on work for money. Only about 5% of total income was from passive sources and such hobbies as stock trading. On the other hand it’s about 1 month worth of our expenses.
