We’re a long way away from freedom if you define it as not depending on work for money. Only about 5% of total income was from passive sources and such hobbies as stock trading. On the other hand it’s about 1 month worth of our expenses.

We used to live in a permanent “saving mode” until a few years ago but when life got easier, we relaxed. In 2007 we didn’t have a savings goal, only an income goal and I think that made us concentrate on the wrong number. Because as we all know, it’s not how much you make but how much you save.
Despite the focus being off somewhat, we added 15.8% to our savings after-tax (I’m estimating taxes at this point of course). Before tax it’s even a more impressive number: 36.85%.
