Investment Tracking Chart – Excel Worksheet

Here’s a spreadsheet I made up for tracking our investments, from purchase to sale. Tracks everything I need with minimal input. It has no macros and is not set up to track partial sales but can be easily tweaked to accommodate that.

March 5th, 2010 Update:
After 2 years of continuous use, I’ve improved and simplified this worksheet significantly.

I’m now offering it for sale at $5.95 which amounts to about 1 cent for every hour I spent using it (and quite a few of those hours went into improving it!)

This template is flexible enough for options, stocks and bonds. Clear instructions are included on a separate page.

Auto-calculation of:

  • current or sale market value
  • profit/loss in $
  • profit/loss in %
  • and break-even points including commission

Thank you for sharing your spreadsheet. I was rather unorganized with my tracking and your simple style of tracking is a great place to start cleaning up my accounts. Your sheet is easy to reformat to my taste and adjust (I have added a column to identify which account each investment is held in (roth, sep, rollover, ira…).

    Hi Betty,
glad you found the spreadsheet usable and expandable.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

I’ll revise the file shortly to include accounts column and – for Canadians – currency marker. Will confirm update in the post.

    Hi,
Thank you…. honestly appreciate the work and the idea to share with everyone…. which is not very easy for everyone.
This work is very useful. Its very simple and easy to track investments and covers basic needs of all.

To add some input (this is just an idea and pls do not take it otherwise)…

To minimise some more input, we may set standard Brokerage, fee, tax and other fees somewhere in the sheet and let the formula pick the details and calculate the broker fee and all other fees and taxes.. with this user may just need to input Quantity and Purchase Price.
However…Initially everyone has to input the respective Fee percentages applicable to them in the Standard rates table.

Because people can remember the quantity and price at whch they have bought and sold, however to input the brokerage and other charges they have to see the Contract note.

If you appreciate, would try and post some more input going forward in making this piece of work little more helpful..

    Thank you..
    Vasanth

    Hello Vasantha,

Standard fees are a great idea!

I will incorporate that into my new version of the tracker (which, by the way, is growing more complex and I’m not sure it’s a good thing – I liked that my original spreadsheet was simple :) )

Right now I just do a lot of copy-pasting, and don’t enter the brokerage fees manually.

I would appreciate any ideas you might have on how this tracking chart can be improved. Anything to automate this further would be great.

    Thank you for your input!
