Questrade – How to Trade in Pre-Market and After-Hours

Buying/Selling Stocks

All types of Questrade software (Webtrader, QuestraderWEB, QuestraderPRO, QuestraderELITE) allow buying and selling in pre-market and after-hours.

Pre-market trading starts at 8am EST
After-hours cut-off time is 5:30pm EST

To place a PM or AH order, you must use:
- a limit order (no market orders)
- GTEM (good-till-extended-markets) type
- ARCA as your ECN

Buying/Selling Options

Some index options, such as SPY, trade until 4:15pm EST. Questrade doesn’t officially support trading options in AH, but you can try setting the order before 4pm as GTEM type, and leave the ECN on AUTO. It may or may not work. No guarantees.

Options other than index, don’t trade after 4pm.

Shorting Stocks

Depending on your software package, you may or may not be able to short outside normal market hours.

Webtrader and QuestraderWEB (with and without streaming data) DO NOT allow you to short in PM and AH.

QuestraderPRO and QuestraderELITE DO allow shorting stocks in PM and AH. Just use the same settings as for buying/selling stocks, that is GTEM/ARCA.

    Doesn’t work:

    Date of Order: 06/12/2009
    Time of Order: 18:32:18 EDT
    Status of order: Rejected

    Action: Sell
    Quantity: 100
    Symbol: BDSI
    Price: $7.49
    Time in Force: GTEM
Notes: Trading has been halted either prior to market open or after close.

    Here’s your problem:

    “Time of Order: 18:32:18 EDT”

Cut-off time is 5:30pm EST. Forgot to mention it.

    Thanks.

Oh, actually I did mention it:

“Pre-market trading starts at 8am EST
    After-hours cut-off time is 5:30pm EST”
